Umoja: A taste of Kenya, Africa

Umoja - Umoja means Unity in Swahili and is the first principal of Kwanzaa, an African-American cultural holiday celebrated from December 26th to January 1st.
The principle of this holiday is beautiful: Striving to create Unity in the family, community and nation.

At the North Park farmers' market this past week, I met a gentleman who runs a tiny booth named Umoja, where some of Kenya's food is served. I happen to try a vegetarian dish that was composed of some typical ingredients used such as okra, sweet potato, and collard greens. With this wonderful mix of ingredients, Avocado Oil, a heart-healthy oil, is used as a base to cook.

When talking with this gentlemen, one can sense a genuine concern for the health of our nation as he spoke about Food Justice which is a movement focusing on the improvement of fresh & healthy food access in all communities.

The presentation of food could not be prettier as you see the preparation of your dish done before your very eyes. For those that are concerned about sodium, none is added, unless you want to add it. A step in the direction of Food Justice. If you are seeking heart-healthy food, I highly recommend a visit to this wonderful booth at the market.
