SD in Depth: How did we get so fat?

I normally don't get the San Diego Union Tribune only because I read most everything "news-wise" on line. My Dad gave me this article not long ago and I thought I would say a few words about it since it is on topic with what I write about. The article is Part 1 in a series and deals with how "obesity rates and health complications continue to climb in the United States". As the article points out -- "eat, drink and be wary".
Most everyone -- or should I say -- everyone knows that the obesity rate has skyrocketed to the point of really having to figure out what we are doing wrong. Since I started this blog well over two years ago, the rise in healthcare costs has continued rising with no end in sight, yet "Americans consume 54 billion meals a year at fast-food and table service restaurants. We typically eat fast food three to four times a week and one in four of us consume fast food everyday." In addition, corporate wellness has become a growing trend with the increase in obesity. "Corporate Wellness is among the most vital investments that a company can make. Businesses that start Corporate Wellness programs aren’t only investing in the physical wellness, safety, and mental health of their employees, but are also taking preventive measures by creating a healthier environment".
Are the statistics regarding obesity not scary enough? When is enough -- well, enough.  Having to upgrade our diet to make it healthier and getting in some form of exercise everyday shouldn't be that difficult, or is it? This incredibly important issue is one that affects not only ourselves, our staggeringly high healthcare costs, our high-mortality conditions and work conditions, but our self esteem and self worth. Aren't all of these reasons enough to make a difference for the better?
I'll also be including the rest of the series of articles soon....
