The Future of Healthcare: Where is it going?

So what should be expected from the future of healthcare? This is a considerable question that seeks a comprehensive answer. David Houle, author of the book, "Entering the Shift Age," aims at reaching his readers by sharing his thoughts and ideas about the future of healthcare. He quotes in his book, "“There will be price competition, price transparency and accountability.”
Through organizations like ACO's (Accountable care organizations) one should already see that there is value in competitive pricing, transparency and above all, accountability. Wikipedia lists the core values of ACOs below:
  1. Provider-led organizations with a strong base of primary care that are collectively accountable for quality and total per capita costs across the full continuum of care for a population of patients;
  2. Payments linked to quality improvements that also reduce overall costs; and,
  3. Reliable and progressively more sophisticated performance measurement, to support improvement and provide confidence that savings are achieved through improvements in care.
The above-mentioned has so much to do with the sort of lifestyles we choose for ourselves. The way things are going with the prevalence of obesity and the chronic diseases that accompany it, there needs to be accountability from everyone -- not just the healthcare professionals.
What are your thoughts about having people be charged higher premiums based on their lifestyle choices? To find out more, read the article; to find out even more, read the book.
